The ‘RijnWaalpad’ and ‘De Liemers’ are high-quality cycle route that connects the cities Arnhem and Nijmegen. The goal is to have a route that encourages commuters to cycle instead of taking the car. Atelier LEK was asked to design the light plan. They asked Fraai Werk to design a custom lantern that matches the progressive character of the region.
Extra Context Part of Project
The design is innovative for the fact that it approaches the way lighs sources are integrated in street lanterns completely different frm what has been done so far. Instead of having one lamp, the housing includes different LEDmodules that ensure a glare-free illumination, specifically tailored for cyclists.
The 550 lanterns are realized by a ‘design & construct’ public tender. The pilot session resulted in an accepted proof of concept. The final product is installed along the route by Lightronics, the winner of the tender.
